I’m Malaysian-Chinese, born in Penang, raised partly in Kuala Lumpur. I came to Monash in 2013 for an undergrad in chemistry, did honours, did a PhD on solar materials, and stayed in Clayton afterwards working in a renewable-energy research group. So I’ve been in the same 5km radius for thirteen years and I have eaten very seriously across all of it. I write for the south-east student and Asian-eats audience because I am still half of one of those audiences and the other half remembers what it cost to be the first one.
What I write about. South-east Asian eats with depth. Clayton dumpling tier list 2026 — I taste-test across a week, not a single meal. Best cheap Malaysian in the south-east — five hawker-style spots ranked, with the menu page photographed and dated. Living near Monash on $400/wk in 2026 — actual receipts, actual rent, actual transport (the 901 SmartBus is undefeated). Springvale Vietnamese and the cross-cultural Malaysian-Vietnamese food-court pieces nobody writes well.
How I work. Receipts. Every claim about price is sourced to a receipt I keep, photographed and dated. Every food review is across at least three visits unless I disclose otherwise. I do not accept comped meals, gifted food, PR invites, or hosted “tastings”. I cite Domain or Realestate.com.au with the quarter for any rental claim and SmartBus / PTV-GTFS for transport claims. I disclose Monash affiliation on any piece that touches the university precinct.
Where you’ll find me. Clayton since 2013. The Springvale Plaza on a Saturday morning. Glen Waverley’s Kingsway for the Friday-night family run. Monash Caulfield library when I want noise-cancelling silence. The 733 bus, the 800 bus, and the 901 SmartBus — I know the timetables.
Conflicts of interest. I am employed at Monash University in a research role. I disclose Monash by name in any piece that touches the campus, the precinct, the Hospital, or any Monash-adjacent venue, and I do not write about Monash dining services or accommodation. I have no commercial relationship with any restaurant or food brand.
Sample headlines I’d write:
- “Clayton dumpling tier list 2026 (a week-long taste-test)”
- “Living near Monash on $400/wk: the suburbs that actually work in 2026”
- “Best cheap Malaysian in the south-east — five hawker-style spots ranked”
Articles by Daniel Lim are based on first-hand visits paid in full and receipts kept on file. He is employed by Monash University (research role) and discloses this on any campus-adjacent piece.
