Is Docklands Good for Families?

Is Docklands Family-Friendly? The Short Answer.

It depends on what kind of family life you want. Docklands works for families who are comfortable with apartment living, value waterfront access, and don’t need a traditional suburban backyard. It does not work for families who want a village feel, established schools within walking distance, or the kind of neighbourhood where kids ride bikes to their friend’s house.

Schools

Docklands Primary School — Footscray Road. The local government primary, opened to serve the growing precinct population. Small, newer, and still establishing its community and reputation.

Most Docklands families send children to schools in North Melbourne, West Melbourne, or the CBD. The proximity to the city means private school options are accessible by tram or walking — Melbourne Grammar, Haileybury CBD campus, and others are within reach.

Secondary options require travel to surrounding suburbs.

Parks and Outdoor Space

Ron Barassi Snr Park — The precinct’s main green space. Ovals, basketball courts, playground, and open grass. It’s a proper park in a precinct that has very little green space otherwise. Weekend mornings attract families for sport and play.

The waterfront promenades are the family walk — flat, safe, and scenic. The harbour provides a natural “edge” to the neighbourhood that kids find engaging. Cycling paths are well-maintained.

The honest limitation: there’s no backyard in Docklands. Families live in apartments, and outdoor space means shared parks and promenades. For some families, that’s a liberating trade-off. For others, it’s a dealbreaker.

What Families Love

  • Walking to the CBD, the library, The District, and the waterfront
  • Ron Barassi Snr Park is a genuine community space for families
  • The Docklands Library has excellent children’s programs
  • Apartment living eliminates garden maintenance
  • The waterfront is a safe, engaging daily environment for kids

What Families Find Tricky

  • No backyard — outdoor space is shared, not private
  • Limited school options within the precinct itself
  • Game day crowds and noise from Marvel Stadium
  • The wind — some days the waterfront is not pleasant for kids
  • No established family community compared to traditional suburbs

The Verdict

Docklands suits families who’ve chosen apartment living deliberately — who want the waterfront, the CBD access, and the modern infrastructure without the suburban house-and-garden package. It’s a lifestyle choice, not a compromise. But families who value backyards, established school communities, and the traditional Australian suburban experience should look at actual suburbs.
