13 Winter Things to Do in Doreen These School Holidays (2026)

Two weeks of school holidays, the sun setting before 5pm, and a house that starts to feel very small by day three. If you’re in Doreen and you have kids at home from 27 June to 12 July 2026, you already know the problem: the cold closes in fast up here on Melbourne’s northern fringe, the reserves go muddy, and “just go outside” only lasts so long.

These 13 ideas are ranked roughly from close-to-home to further afield. Some are free. Some cost money. All are real.

1. Library school-holiday craft and storytime — FREE, book fast

Your local Whittlesea Council library runs free school-holiday programs every term. Places fill within days of bookings opening, so check the council Eventbrite page the moment you read this. Craft sessions, storytime, maker activities — genuinely good for under-10s and it costs nothing.

2. Ashgate Red Gum Reserve — FREE

A flat, manageable walk through red gum woodland right in Doreen. Wrap the kids in layers, hand them a stick, and let them burn an hour. The reserve is muddy in winter so old shoes are essential, but that’s half the fun at a certain age. Pair it with a warm drink on the way back.

3. Hot chocolate circuit — FREE to low cost

This is an underrated school-holiday activity for Doreen. Pick three local cafes and make a morning of comparing hot chocolates. The Doreen strip and nearby South Morang have options worth the short drive. Set the kids a scoring system. You get coffee. Everyone wins.

4. Heated indoor pool — low cost

The Mill Park Leisure Centre (a short drive south-west along Plenty Road) has a heated indoor pool. It’s the kind of reliable, boring, excellent option that carries a two-hour school-holiday window with minimal drama. Check current pricing and session times on their website before you go.

5. Council vacation care — low cost, book ahead

Whittlesea Council and YMCA both run vacation care programs across the area, typically 8am–6pm. If you’re working through the holidays or simply need a structured day, this is worth booking now. Spots in the northern suburbs do fill. Search “Whittlesea vacation care 2026” for this term’s options.

6. Indoor play centre or trampoline park — low cost

Plenty Valley and South Morang have a few options for indoor play and trampoline parks. These aren’t free, but on a freezing Tuesday when cabin fever has peaked, they’re genuinely useful. Worth having one pre-researched and ready to go as the break-glass option.

7. O’Brien Icehouse, Docklands — budget, ~45 min drive

Ice skating at O’Brien Icehouse on Docklands Drive is one of the better school-holiday activities for mixed-age families. There’s a dedicated under-8s area and skate aids available for wobbly first-timers. Check session times and prices on their website — it gets busy in the holidays so booking ahead is smart.

8. Firelight Festival, Docklands — FREE, evenings only

3–5 July 2026, Harbour Esplanade, Docklands. Nightly light and water shows at 6:30pm and 8:30pm, food trucks, and it costs nothing to attend. From Doreen you’re looking at around 40–45 minutes depending on traffic. Given it’s a school holiday and the show is evening-only, this is a good Friday or Saturday excursion. Dress warmly — standing by the water in July is cold.

9. Queen Victoria Winter Night Market — FREE entry, Wednesdays

Running every Wednesday evening, 5–10pm, through to 26 August. Free entry, fire pits, and a genuine variety of street food. It’s a decent option for older kids and teens who’d appreciate the atmosphere. From Doreen, allow around 45 minutes into the city. A weeknight can work well if your kids handle a later evening.

10. NGV free permanent galleries — FREE

NGV International on St Kilda Rd has free entry to its permanent collection year-round. Under-16s get free entry to everything. A wet winter day, the NGV’s heated rooms, and the Egyptian or Impressionist galleries will carry a solid two hours. No booking required for the permanent collection. Combine with lunch in the surrounding area if you want to make a full day of it.

11. NGV Winter Masterpieces: Cartier — ticketed, older kids and teens

Running 12 June to 4 October 2026 at NGV International. The Cartier exhibition is ticketed and best suited to older kids — say 11 and up — or teens who’ll engage with design, jewellery, and 20th-century history. It’s a marquee wet-weather day trip. Check pricing and book online; popular timeslots sell out during school holidays.

12. Christmas-in-July lunch, Yarra Valley or Dandenongs — mid-range

A number of venues across the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges run Christmas-in-July set lunches during the July school holidays — roast meats, warm desserts, often with a view of the ranges or vineyards. From Doreen you’re heading south-east, roughly 45–60 minutes to the Yarra Valley. Worth searching “[venue name] Christmas in July 2026” to find what’s running this season and booking well ahead.

13. Lake Mountain snow day trip — budget, full-day commitment

Lake Mountain near Marysville is Melbourne’s closest snow-play area, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours from Doreen each way. The season runs 6 June to 6 September, snow permitting. There’s a dedicated snow-play area, and tobogganing costs around $33 for ages 6 and up — check current pricing on the Lake Mountain resort website. Be honest with yourself about the day: you need to leave early, dress everyone in proper layers, pack food, and expect a tired drive home. It’s a big, memorable day when it works. Check snow conditions the night before — a green run in July can mean disappointing cover.

One planning note

Council library sessions and vacation care fill fastest — check availability this week if either is on your list. Everything city-side (Firelight, the Night Market, NGV) benefits from a quick check of dates and session times before you drive in. The rest you can largely show up for, though Icehouse and the Cartier exhibition are both worth pre-booking during the school holiday peak.

Stay warm, Doreen. It’s a long two weeks.
