The best rainy-day move in Fitzroy is the Gertrude Street to Rose Street loop: Centre for Contemporary Photography, Industry Beans, then Brunswick Street Bookstore or Marios depending on whether you want quiet or a proper sit-down meal. It works because the whole thing sits inside a roughly 400 m walking radius from the Brunswick Street and Johnston Street corner, so you are not pretending a wet Melbourne afternoon is still a walking tour. CCP gives you a free, indoor, low-pressure stop at 404 George Street, Industry Beans gives you hot food, espresso, Wi-Fi and long benches at 3 Rose Street, and Brunswick Street keeps the fallback options dense if your first idea is full.

This beats the obvious Brunswick Street vintage crawl because rain kills the best part of vintage shopping: the slow door-to-door browsing, the footpath racks, the stopping without thinking. Fitzroy is still excellent in bad weather, but only if you shrink the plan. Tram 11 on Brunswick Street and tram 86 on Smith Street both run frequently through the day, usually around 6-10 minute headways, so you can arrive without a train station inside the suburb. Fitzroy is not one rainy-day zone. Brunswick Street central, especially between Johnston and Greeves, is the loudest and densest spine: cafes, bookshops, bars, vintage stores and music venues packed close enough that one umbrella is enough. Gertrude Street is calmer and more design-led, with CCP and a slower gallery-store rhythm between Smith and Brunswick. Rose Street is the warehouse pocket, and Industry Beans is the obvious long-stay stop if you need a table, a proper coffee order and a reason not to keep walking.

Parking is the least romantic part. Most of the inner grid is paid 2-hour parking, and circling Brunswick Street in rain is a bad use of your afternoon. If you drove in from the suburbs, park once near Smith Street or use a longer-stay car park, then walk the loop. Public toilets are limited unless you are stopping in a cafe, so plan one real sit-down rather than trying to graze through six tiny stops. If you are starting west of Brunswick Street, the CCP and Gertrude Street side feels easy; if you are already pushed toward Smith Street, you are basically sharing the day with Collingwood anyway.

Skip this plan if your real goal was bargain vintage shopping. Wet weather turns that into damp sleeves, steamed-up windows and rushed decisions. Also be honest about kids: CCP, Brunswick Street Bookstore and a bakery-style stop can work well before dinner, but many Fitzroy venues are not family-shaped after 6 pm. If you are west of Carlton Gardens or already closer to Cinema Nova, probably go Carlton instead and stop pretending Fitzroy needs to supply the cinema.

If you are an inner-north local, pick the Brunswick-Gertrude loop: CCP, lunch or coffee, Brunswick Street Bookstore, then a bar if the rain keeps going. If you are a visiting couple who drove in, pick one Gertrude Street cafe, park once, and keep the afternoon on foot. If you are solo or working, pick Industry Beans first and use Atomica on Brunswick Street as the quieter alternative if the Rose Street warehouse energy is too busy. If you are a parent with school-age kids, pick the daytime version: bakery, Brunswick Street Bookstore, CCP, done before the after-work crowd arrives.

Cost depends on how much you sit down. CCP is free, and a bookshop stop can be free if you have discipline, but Fitzroy becomes expensive the second every dry doorway turns into a coffee, snack or glass of wine. The original rent reality explains why: postcode 3065 carries a premium over 3066 Collingwood and 3068 Fitzroy North, with REIV and DFFH rental data putting one-bedroom medians in the high-$500s and two-bedroom warehouse-style stock above $750 per week in early 2026. The same density that makes rainy days easy also pushes the suburb’s prices up.

Time of day matters more than season. Wet Saturday afternoons are the sweet spot if you start before 2 pm and accept one proper indoor anchor. Friday nights are better for adults who want bars and taprooms, not for families trying to improvise shelter. Summer rain is still fine because the walking gaps are short; cold winter rain needs a tighter plan and fewer crossings. Do not build this around six stops. Build it around two good ones and one backup.
