Arriving at Deakin University in Melbourne as an international student means setting up housing, banking, transport, OSHC, and figuring out the multi-campus geography (Burwood, Geelong Waterfront, Geelong Waurn Ponds, Warrnambool) - all in your first two weeks. Most international students study at Burwood; this is the practical setup guide.

Before You Arrive

Confirmation of Enrolment from Deakin, student visa subclass 500 approved, OSHC booked. Pre-arrival accommodation: Deakin Residential Services offers short-term Burwood Halls bookings ($300-$500/week) or homestay through Deakin Homestay ($350-$450/week with meals). Most international students book 1-2 weeks of one of these while finding permanent housing.

Deakin Campus Geography

Deakin has 4 main campuses: Burwood (Melbourne, the largest, most international students), Geelong Waterfront, Geelong Waurn Ponds, Warrnambool. Plus partner-program online and offshore options. Most international students at Deakin Melbourne study at Burwood; some at Geelong campuses for specific degrees. Inter-campus shuttle bus runs Burwood-Geelong on weekdays.

Week 1: Permanent Housing

For first-year undergrads: Deakin Burwood Halls ($300-$500/week). Off-campus: Burwood ($300-$400/room/week share), Box Hill South ($240-$340), Mount Waverley ($240-$340), Box Hill ($260-$360). Use Flatmates.com.au and Deakin Off-Campus Accommodation. Bond to RTBA.

Week 1: Bank Account

Big four banks - student accounts free. CBA Smart Access opens in branch with passport + CoE + Australian address. Deakin has CBA representatives at Burwood during enrolment week.

Week 1: SIM Card

Optus, Telstra, Vodafone, ALDI - student prepaid plans $30-$40/month for 30+ GB. Buy SIM at airport, switch to cheaper plan once bank set up.

Week 2: TFN, OSHC, Health

TFN application via ATO website is free, takes 28 days. OSHC providers: Bupa, Medibank, NIB, Allianz Care, AHM. Deakin University Health Service (Burwood) handles student GP visits at concession rates. Reciprocal Medicare countries get Medicare in addition to OSHC.

Transport: Myki and Tram 75

Buy Myki at any 7-Eleven or train station. Student concession: $4.60/day cap. Apply via PTV with Deakin student ID. The tram 75 from CBD to Burwood Highway is the campus connection - 50-65 minutes from Flinders Street, 25-30 minutes from Camberwell. Box Hill train + bus is faster from northern east. The Burwood Highway express bus from Hawthorn is 25-35 minutes.

First-Week Eating

Cheapest student lunches: Box Hill Central food court ($8-$14 across Asian cuisines), Burwood Highway strip ($10-$13), Camberwell Junction ($14-$18). Campus options: Building B food court ($8-$14).

Deakin Services Worth Knowing

Deakin Connect: catch-all student services hub. Deakin Counselling and Psychological Services: free for enrolled students. Career Services: resume help, internships. DUSA (Deakin University Student Association): cheap food, social clubs, advocacy. Deakin International Student Support: visa-specific advice.

Cultural Adjustment

Most international students at Deakin report homesickness peaks at week 6-8. Strategies: join one of 100+ student clubs via DUSA, attend Welcome Week events, find familiar cuisine (Box Hill for Chinese, Glen Waverley for Korean, Springvale 30-minute trip for Vietnamese, Carlton 30-minute trip for Italian).
