You have landed for Deakin and your first fortnight is already full: housing, bank, SIM, OSHC, TFN, Myki, and working out whether Burwood Highway is actually close to anything. Do these in the right order and Melbourne gets easier fast.
The Verdict
The right move is to treat Deakin Burwood as your setup base for the first two weeks, even if you plan to move slightly cheaper later. Most international students at Deakin Melbourne study at Burwood, and the boring admin is easier when you are near campus: Deakin Connect, Deakin International Student Support, Deakin University Health Service, DUSA, enrolment-week bank help, and the tram 75 corridor are all built around that first landing period. Book 1-2 weeks of temporary accommodation before you fly, then use that time to inspect share rooms in person instead of locking yourself into a year of housing from overseas.
For temporary housing, Deakin Residential Services Burwood Halls at $300-$500/week or Deakin Homestay at $350-$450/week with meals are the cleanest arrival options. For permanent share housing, start with Burwood at $300-$400/room/week if convenience matters, then compare Box Hill South and Mount Waverley at $240-$340, or Box Hill at $260-$360 if food and transport matter more than walking distance. Open a student account with one of the big four banks once you have your passport, Confirmation of Enrolment, and Australian address; CBA Smart Access is the obvious pick if Deakin has CBA representatives at Burwood during enrolment week. Buy an Optus, Telstra, Vodafone, or ALDI SIM at the airport only to get moving, then switch to a $30-$40/month prepaid plan once your bank account is working. Don’t spend your first week commuting from the far side of Melbourne because the rent looks cheaper online — you will lose the money in transport, missed inspections, and stress.
Local Reality
Burwood is not a classic inner-city student suburb. The campus sits on Burwood Highway, and your daily life will orbit tram 75, buses, campus buildings, Box Hill, Camberwell Junction, and whichever share house you can actually afford. From Flinders Street, tram 75 to Burwood Highway can take 50-65 minutes. From Camberwell, it is closer to 25-30 minutes. If you are coming from the northern east, Box Hill train plus bus can be faster than crawling along the tram line. The Burwood Highway express bus from Hawthorn is usually a better bet at 25-35 minutes when it lines up with your timetable.
Food is where the geography starts to make sense. Box Hill Central food court is the strongest cheap-eating anchor, with $8-$14 lunches across Asian cuisines. The Burwood Highway strip is more practical between classes, usually $10-$13. Camberwell Junction is better for variety but sits more around $14-$18, so it is not the everyday student answer unless you are already passing through. On campus, Building B food court keeps lunches in the $8-$14 zone. For familiar food when homesickness hits, the realistic options are Box Hill for Chinese, Glen Waverley for Korean, Springvale for Vietnamese on a roughly 30-minute trip, and Carlton for Italian on a similar trip.
Skip this plan if your degree is actually based at Geelong Waterfront, Geelong Waurn Ponds, or Warrnambool. Deakin has four main campuses, and Burwood is only the right centre of gravity for Melbourne students. The Burwood-Geelong shuttle runs on weekdays, but it is not a lifestyle strategy. If you are west of the Geelong campuses most days, build your life around Geelong instead.
Who This Suits
If you are a first-year undergraduate who wants the lowest-friction landing, pick Deakin Burwood Halls for the first stretch and move only after you understand your timetable. If you want meals and a softer arrival, pick Deakin Homestay for 1-2 weeks while you inspect rooms. If you are budget-first, inspect in Box Hill South or Mount Waverley before paying Burwood prices. If you care most about food, trains, and weekend life, Box Hill is the stronger base than a random cheap room near campus. If you already know you will commute from the CBD, be honest about tram 75: 50-65 minutes each way becomes a major part of your week.
Cost expectations are simple but unforgiving. Temporary accommodation will usually sit around $300-$500/week at Burwood Halls or $350-$450/week with meals through homestay. Permanent share rooms are roughly $300-$400/week in Burwood, $240-$340 in Box Hill South and Mount Waverley, and $260-$360 in Box Hill. Student prepaid mobile plans usually land around $30-$40/month for 30+ GB. Cheap lunches can stay near $8-$14 if you use Box Hill Central, Building B, and the Burwood Highway strip; Camberwell Junction is more like $14-$18.
Timing matters. In week one, secure permanent housing, open the bank account, and make the SIM functional. In week two, apply for your Tax File Number through the ATO, confirm OSHC details with Bupa, Medibank, NIB, Allianz Care, or AHM, and get your Myki concession moving through PTV once your Deakin student ID is ready. Homesickness often bites later, around weeks 6-8, so do not wait until then to join DUSA clubs, attend Welcome Week events, or learn where your familiar food lives.
