The Victorian school holidays land 27 June to 12 July, and in Heidelberg West that means two-and-a-half weeks of dark afternoons, cold mornings, and children who need somewhere to go. The suburb sits in Melbourne’s northern middle ring — about 10 kilometres from the CBD, close to Darebin Creek and Banyule’s leafy edges — which gives you a decent spread of free local options plus reasonable access to the city. Here is what is actually worth doing.
1. FREE: Library holiday programs at your local branch
Banyule Council runs school-holiday craft sessions and storytime at its library branches. These fill fast on Eventbrite — book the moment the program drops, usually a week or two before holidays start. Cost: free. Ages: 3–10 particularly well served.
2. FREE: Darebin Creek Parklands — a cold-air walk that costs nothing
The Darebin Creek Parklands run along the eastern edge of the suburb and give you a proper outdoor stretch even in winter. Rug the kids up, pack a thermos and do the creek trail. The landscape is genuine bushland corridor, not manicured lawn, so there is always something to look at — waterbirds, muddy banks, old trees. Free, and good for burning energy before lunch.
3. FREE: C.H. Sullivan Memorial Park
A local park option when you need somewhere for younger kids to run without driving anywhere. Works best on a dry winter morning before the cold sets in. No cost, no booking.
4. BUDGET: Hot chocolate at a local cafe
Heidelberg West has a modest but real cafe scene — there are local spots covered in our brunch guides that do proper coffee and hot drinks. On a grey July morning, a long hot chocolate is a genuine act of parenting. Let the kids warm up while you sit still for ten minutes.
5. BUDGET: Council and YMCA vacation care
If you are working across the holidays, Banyule’s vacation care programs (often run through YMCA at local schools and community centres) cover 8am–6pm. Book ahead — places go quickly, especially in the first week. Fees vary by session; check eligibility for the Child Care Subsidy.
6. BUDGET: Nearest heated indoor pool or leisure centre
An indoor heated pool is the single most reliable wet-weather option for Heidelberg West families. Your nearest options are in the Banyule and Darebin networks. Lap swimming, waterslides where available, and toddler splash areas. Check opening hours and casual swim costs before you go — they vary by centre and day.
7. BUDGET–SPLURGE: Indoor play centre or trampoline park
The inner north and northern suburbs have several indoor play centres and trampoline parks within a 15–20 minute drive. These are not free, but they absorb a rainy Wednesday with genuine effectiveness. Search for options in Preston, Heidelberg or Bundoora depending on the age of your children.
8. SPLURGE: NGV Winter Masterpieces — Cartier (St Kilda Road, ticketed)
The marquee wet-weather excursion for winter 2026 is Cartier at the NGV International on St Kilda Road, running 12 June to 4 October. It is ticketed and genuinely impressive — jewellery, objects and design at museum scale. Best for older kids and teenagers who have some interest in art, design or history. From Heidelberg West you are looking at roughly 25–35 minutes by car or a combination of tram and train. Important: the NGV’s free permanent collection is separately accessed and genuinely excellent for younger children — you do not need a ticket to spend a quality two hours there.
9. FREE: Firelight Festival, Docklands (3–5 July)
Three nights only: 3, 4 and 5 July at Harbour Esplanade, Docklands. A free light and water show runs at 6.30pm and 8.30pm each night, with food trucks on site. This is a dark-evening outing — plan for kids in warm layers and build in dinner from the food trucks. From Heidelberg West the drive is around 20–25 minutes; parking around Docklands on a weekday evening is manageable. No ticket required, no booking.
10. FREE: Queen Victoria Winter Night Market (Wednesdays until 26 August)
Running every Wednesday 5–10pm at the Queen Victoria Market through to late August, this is a reliable mid-week outing when the holidays coincide with a Wednesday. Free entry, street food, fire pits, mulled wine for adults. The atmosphere is genuinely warm despite the temperature. Drive is similar to Docklands — 20–25 minutes from Heidelberg West. Best for families with children old enough to enjoy a night-time market crowd.
11. BUDGET: Ice skating at O’Brien Icehouse, Docklands
The Icehouse in Docklands has a dedicated under-8s area and skate aids available for hire, which makes it workable even for first-timers. Expect session fees plus skate hire. Book ahead for school holidays — popular sessions sell out. Same drive time as Docklands above.
12. SPLURGE: Lake Mountain snow day-trip
Lake Mountain near Marysville is the closest snowfield to Melbourne — roughly 2 to 2.5 hours each way from Heidelberg West. The season runs 6 June to 6 September (snow conditions permitting). There is a designated snow-play area and tobogganing is available for around $33 for ages six and up. Be honest with yourself: this is a full day commitment. Leave early, pack warm layers, food and dry changes of clothes, and account for the drive home in the dark. On a clear day with good snow cover it is worth every minute. Check the resort website for conditions before you leave.
13. SPLURGE: Christmas-in-July long lunch, Yarra Valley or Dandenongs
Several restaurants and wineries in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges run Christmas-in-July lunches through the holidays — roast meats, open fires, the whole thing. The Yarra Valley is around 45–55 minutes from Heidelberg West. Not every venue is child-friendly, so check before booking. This one works better as a family outing with older children or as a grandparent occasion while younger kids are in vacation care.
Planning tip
The two things that book out first are council library sessions and the Icehouse. Both open registrations weeks before the holidays. Set a reminder to check Banyule’s Eventbrite page and the Icehouse booking calendar the moment school holidays are announced. Everything else — Firelight, the Night Market, the NGV — you can organise closer to the date, but Lake Mountain requires an early-morning start so do not leave that one to a last-minute decision.
