Correction (1 October 2026): an earlier version of this page was produced by a template generator. It listed ten “Indian food” venues in Lalor, with addresses, prices, seat counts and dishes such as sourdough and pumpkin risotto, that the generator made up; it gave Lalor a postcode that is not Lalor’s; and it said every place had been visited in person, which was not true. It has been rewritten from scratch. Every place below was checked against at least two current sources, led by its own website or ordering menu where it has one, on 1 October 2026.
Lalor was built on co-operation. The suburb, 17 km north of the CBD in the City of Whittlesea, takes its name from Peter Lalor of the Eureka Stockade by way of the Peter Lalor Home Building Co-operative Society, and the Rochdale Square shops near the station honour Rochdale, the English town tied to the first principles of the co-operative movement. The Indian food here is a newer layer on that story, and what there is of it sits on High Street, the main road through the suburb.
Community context: at the 2021 Census, India was Lalor’s most common birthplace after Australia, at 5.1 per cent of residents (1,178 people). Its homes speak many languages, though: Arabic (10.6 per cent), Macedonian (7.6) and Vietnamese (6.8) were the most-used languages at home after English.
That makes Lalor an honest “in and around” story. Inside the suburb, an Indian bakery on High Street is listed online without a menu with prices that we could read, and the Indian kitchen listed a few doors along may no longer be trading. So this guide starts there, then crosses into the neighbours the map puts closest: Thomastown to the south, Mill Park to the east and Epping to the north. Every price below was copied from the venue’s own website or ordering page on 1 October 2026. Menus move, so give them a squiz before you order.

Anand’s Bakery & Cafe — 371 High St, Lalor VIC 3075
On High Street, a bakery rather than a curry house. Its Everything Indian listing says it creates “Eggless cakes for all special occasions”, and Curateria files it under Indian, Bakery, Indian Sweets and Cakes. Eggless baking is common in Indian bakeries because many Indian vegetarians do not eat egg. We did not find a menu with prices online.
On the menu: an eggless celebration cake, made without egg so it suits a vegetarian table.
Indian Spice Art — 215 High St, Thomastown VIC 3074
Down in Thomastown, a restaurant that offers dine-in, takeaway and delivery, with an online ordering page linked from its own site. Dal makhani is $15.99: black lentils and kidney beans cooked overnight, as the menu puts it, in a mild tomato sauce. Garlic naan is $3.99 and two vegetable samosas are $7.99, so a curry, bread and a snack make a feed for one.

Baba Sweets — 191 High St, Thomastown VIC 3074
A sweet shop and restaurant that describes its food as coming “all from a 100% vegetarian menu”. Its own ordering site lists the signature veg thali at $15.00 (dal of the day, curry of the day and two breads), a two-samosa plate at $7.50, and the sweets by the plate: six jalebi for $5.50, or two gulab jamun for $5.50. Jalebi are spirals of fermented batter fried crisp and soaked in syrup; gulab jamun are soft milk-dough balls in a rose or cardamom syrup.
On the menu: the signature veg thali, a set plate of small dishes sized for one.
Swagat The Welcome — 21/391 Settlement Rd, Thomastown VIC 3074
A restaurant its own site pitches for functions and weddings as well as dinner, and the one on this list with an all-you-can-eat buffet: $25.99 on weekdays and $28.99 on weekends. The site’s banner says the buffet runs every day except Tuesday, while its footer lists Monday and Tuesday as closed, so ring before a Monday visit. From the a la carte menu, butter chicken is $20.99, daal makhani $17.99, and pani puri $13.99. Pani puri are hollow crisp shells you fill with spiced water and eat in one bite, a street snack that is as much game as food.

The chain has a page written for Lalor: it says its Plenty Valley restaurant “is just a short drive away from Lalor” and offers delivery “across Lalor and surrounding areas”. The name gives away the speciality: the masala dosa, a crisp crepe of fermented rice and lentil batter with spiced potato, is $17.95; a plain or paper dosa is $12.95; and one sambar idly with one vada, a steamed rice cake and a savoury lentil doughnut with lentil broth, is $9.95. The chicken dum biryani is $20.95 and garlic naan $4.95 for anyone ordering North Indian alongside.

Aroma Indian Cuisine — Shop 6/2 Lyndarum Dr, Epping VIC 3076
The Epping kitchen whose own site names Lalor among its delivery suburbs. Its ordering site leads with deals it files under “Limited Time Only”: a small thali at $18.99 (two naan with a 250 ml curry, or rice with curry), a full thali with two curries at $29.99, and a budget pack for two adults at $54.99. Its homepage lists biryani at $14.99: vegetables or meat cooked with basmati rice, nuts and spices.

Jumbo Meals and Snacks, 379 High Street, is listed by Everything Indian and has a DoorDash store page, but when we checked on 2 October 2026 that page said “Jumbo Meals and Snacks is not active” and its own website did not load, so do not count on it without ringing first. Vindaloo Palace is listed by Zest and Everything Indian at Shop 26, Rochdale Square; we found no website or online menu for it. Deep Indian Supermarket, an Indian grocer, is listed at 3/494 High Street by India.com.au and by a second business directory.

We confirmed each address at a second, independent source: the Australian Good Food Guide, Westfield, Curateria, HappyCow, Tagvenue, Everything Indian, DoorDash, Zest or India.com.au. We did not use delivery-app prices. Census figures are from the ABS 2021 QuickStats for Lalor; the suburb’s history and location are from Wikipedia. Online prices can differ from the counter, deals come and go, and opening hours differ between some venues’ own pages, so we have left hours out.
