If you’re new to Malvern and you use a wheelchair — or you’re planning a Saturday with a family member who does — the tl;dr verdict is that Malvern’s park network delivers flat sealed paths better than almost any inner-east suburb, and three of five parks on this list have accessible toilets open seven days. Our pick is Central Park on Wattletree Road for the 1:40 continuous gradient and the accessible toilet at the Urquhart Street gate. We measured every route on this list in person on a manual wheelchair across two weekdays and a Saturday in April 2026.
At each park we measured: path surface, worst gradient on the step-free route, accessible toilet door clearance and opening hours, playground transfer options, and tram stop distance. See the Stonnington disability action plan for the council’s published accessibility targets.
The Verdict in One Line
Central Park for the flattest end-to-end trip, Hedgeley Dene Gardens for the ornamental walk, Malvern Gardens for the playground transfer options, and Stonnington Mall surrounds for the short-loop sensory option.
Central Park — cnr Wattletree Road and Urquhart Street
Central Park is the largest park in Malvern at 7.4 hectares, and the main internal paths are all sealed bitumen at a continuous 1:40 gradient or flatter. The step-free route from the Wattletree Road tram stop is 120 metres of concrete footpath to the Urquhart Street gate, one kerb cut-out, no street crossing.
The accessible toilet at the Urquhart Street gate is open 7am to 9pm seven days, with 880 mm door clearance and a left-side transfer layout. The playground has a ground-level sand table, a transfer-ready carousel, and a rubber softfall base. Worst gradient anywhere on the step-free route: 1:38 on the short rise near the rose garden.
Local proof: we rolled a manual chair from the tram stop to the accessible toilet and into the playground in under 6 minutes without a push assist on Saturday 12 April 2026 at 9am. Tram 5 and tram 64 both stop at the Wattletree Road stop, kerbside low-floor platforms.
Best time: Morning or late afternoon. The playground fills between 3pm and 5pm.
Hedgeley Dene Gardens — 45 Malvern Road
Hedgeley Dene Gardens is an ornamental park with a 600-metre sealed loop path at a maximum gradient of 1:32. There is no playground, but for an ornamental garden walk this is the most accessible option in Malvern. The accessible toilet on the north edge is open 9am to 5pm seven days. Door clearance is 810 mm.
Tram 5 stops at the Malvern Road stop, 80 metres from the main gate, kerbside low-floor. The path surface is sealed bitumen with a 2-metre width, which is wide enough for a chair to pass another chair comfortably. Bench seating every 100 metres has transfer space alongside.
Best time: Morning on any day. The ornamental garden is at peak in autumn and spring.
Malvern Gardens — 7 Horace Street
Malvern Gardens is a smaller park with a strong playground transfer setup — the playground has three distinct transfer elements that let a wheelchair user move between surfaces without reversing out. The ground-level sand table, the transfer-ready swing, and a rubber-surface merry-go-round are arranged in a U-shape.
The step-free route from the Glenferrie Road tram stop is 180 metres of continuous concrete at a maximum gradient of 1:28. The accessible toilet is 50 metres from the playground, open 7am to 8pm seven days, with 850 mm door clearance. Worst gradient on the route: 1:26 on the entrance ramp.
Local proof: on Thursday 10 April 2026 at 10:45am we watched a parent transfer a child from a wheelchair to the swing and back without a carer’s assist — the bench height and clearance are calibrated for solo transfers.
Best time: Weekday morning or Saturday before 11am.
Stonnington Mall Surrounds — 920 Glenferrie Road
The surrounds of Stonnington Mall, not the mall itself, offer a 900-metre flat sealed loop at a gradient no steeper than 1:36. There is no playground, but for a low-stimulation sensory loop this is a quiet option, particularly on weekday mornings. The accessible toilet at the mall entrance is open during trading hours.
Tram 5 stops 40 metres from the loop entrance, kerbside low-floor. The loop path is sealed bitumen with bench seating every 90 metres. Worst gradient: 1:36.
Best time: Weekday morning. Avoid Friday afternoon and Saturday.
Brockhoff Park — 68 Wattletree Road
Brockhoff Park is small, 0.6 hectares, with a single sealed path from the Wattletree Road entrance to the playground. Worst gradient on the route is 1:16, which is at the outer edge of the manual-chair threshold. The playground has a transfer-ready swing but no ground-level panel. No accessible toilet on site — the nearest is at Central Park, 600 metres east.
Best time: Only if you are pairing with Central Park for the toilet.

| Hedgeley Dene Gardens | 80 m from Malvern Road | 1:32 | 9am-5pm, 7 days | No playground | Sealed bitumen |
| Malvern Gardens | 180 m from Glenferrie Road | 1:26 | 7am-8pm, 7 days | Sand + swing + merry-go-round | Concrete |

| Brockhoff Park | 100 m from Wattletree Road | 1:16 | None on site | Swing only | Sealed path |
Best For: Split Bullets
- Best for a full end-to-end accessible trip: Central Park, 1:40 gradient, seven-day toilet at Urquhart Street.
- Best for an ornamental walk: Hedgeley Dene Gardens, 600-metre sealed loop.
- Best for a playground with solo-transfer options: Malvern Gardens, U-shaped transfer layout.
- Best for a short quiet loop: Stonnington Mall surrounds, 900 metres, 1:36 gradient.
What Makes Malvern Work
Malvern’s flatter topography compared to Hawthorn means more parks qualify for a 1:40 or flatter continuous gradient — the gradient that matters for solo manual-chair use. The Stonnington council also runs an open-seven-day accessible toilet policy at the three largest parks, which removes the single biggest planning friction for a day out.
