Melbourne CBD Nightlife Guide 2026

Melbourne CBD after dark is a different city. The suits leave, the laneway bars light up, and the city remembers why it is Australia’s nightlife capital.

The Bar Scene

Rooftop Bars

Rooftop Bar - Curtin House, Swanston Street - The original Melbourne rooftop experience. Astroturf, city views, and a crowd that ranges from after-work drinks to late-night chaos. Open-air cinema in summer.

Siglo - Spring Street - Cigar bar overlooking Parliament House. This is where you go when you want to feel like you have made it. Expensive, sophisticated, genuinely impressive.

Hidden Bars

Bar Americano - Presgrave Place - Six seats. Standing room for maybe 10. The cocktails are some of the best in Australia.

Eau de Vie - Malthouse Lane - Speakeasy vibes done right. Dark, intimate, and the cocktail menu reads like a novel.

Beneath Driver Lane - Driver Lane - Underground wine bar with a curated list. Moody lighting, excellent cheese boards.

Pub Revival

The Royal Melbourne Hotel - Bourke Street - Classic pub with a thoughtful refresh. Good beer list, decent pub food, and a crowd that actually wants to talk to strangers.

Live Music

Cherry Bar - AC/DC Lane - Rock and roll institution. Small, loud, sweaty, perfect.

The Toff in Town - Curtin House - Eclectic programming from jazz to electronic to comedy. The train carriage interior is still one of Melbourne’s best bar designs.

Late Night Eats

  • Stalactites (Lonsdale Street): Gyros at 3am. A Melbourne rite of passage.
  • Chinatown (Little Bourke Street): The whole strip comes alive after midnight.
  • HuTong Dumpling Bar: Late-night dumplings worth the midnight queue.

What Night to Go Out

  • Thursday: The new Friday. Best bar atmosphere with fewer crowds.
  • Friday: Peak everything. Book ahead or accept chaos.
  • Saturday: More tourists, but the late-night scene is strongest.
  • Sunday: Session Sundays at certain venues. Surprisingly good.

Getting Home

Night Rider buses run Friday and Saturday nights. Uber surge pricing peaks around 2am. Plan ahead or embrace the tram network.
