Melbourne Nightlife Guide — Best Bars, Pubs and Live Music by Suburb

Melbourne’s nightlife doesn’t follow a single script. Every suburb has its own after-dark personality — from the sticky-floored rock pubs of Collingwood to the wine bars tucked behind Brunswick bookshops, from St Kilda’s beachside cocktail terraces to the rooftop venues watching the sun set over the CBD skyline.

We’ve put together detailed nightlife guides for over 30 Melbourne suburbs, written by locals who actually drink there.

What Makes Each Suburb Different

Inner North (Fitzroy, Collingwood, Brunswick, Northcote): Craft beer, live music, vinyl bars, and venues where the band might outnumber the audience on a Tuesday. Dress code: whatever you slept in.

South Side (St Kilda, South Yarra, Prahran, Windsor): Cocktail bars, rooftop terraces, and places where the lighting budget exceeded the food budget. Chapel Street still has energy at 2am.

West (Footscray, Kensington, Seddon): The fastest-growing bar scene in Melbourne. Former warehouses now serve natural wine. The late-night Vietnamese restaurants are still the real draw.

East (Hawthorn, Kew, Richmond): More restrained, but don’t sleep on the pubs. Bridge Road and Swan Street hold their own against anywhere inner-city.

Tips for Going Out in Melbourne

  • Public transport runs late on weekends. Night Network trains and trams operate Friday and Saturday nights. Check PTV for routes.
  • Cash is mostly dead. Almost everywhere takes card, but a few old-school pubs still prefer cash.
  • Lockout laws don’t exist here. Unlike Sydney, Melbourne never implemented them. Venues close when they close.
  • The laneway bars are real. If a venue has no sign and you have to walk through an alley to find it, you’re probably in the right place.

Check back regularly — we add new suburbs and update existing guides as venues open (and close, because Melbourne).
