Melbourne’s cocktail bar scene is genuinely world-class — the city consistently places multiple venues in the World’s 50 Best Bars list. But the best drinking in Melbourne isn’t in the obvious places. It’s behind unmarked doors, down laneways you’d walk past, and in basements you need a password to enter.
The World-Class Tier
Eau de Vie (CBD)
Behind an unmarked door on Malthouse Lane. This is Melbourne’s most consistently excellent cocktail bar — every drink is executed at a level that justifies the $24-28 price point. a local venue (hidden room within the hidden bar) requires a booking and is worth every awkward door knock.
Order this: The Rum Blazer ($26). They literally set it on fire in front of you. Theatre and flavour.
Bar Americano (CBD)
Standing room only. Eight seats. No menu — tell them what you like, they make something perfect. This is the Melbourne cocktail experience distilled to its purest form. $22-26 per drink and worth every cent.
Byrdi (CBD)
Rooftop cocktails using Australian native botanicals. The wattleseed espresso martini ($24) uses actual Australian ingredients, not just Australian vibes. The sunset views from level 4 are a bonus you don’t pay extra for.
The Speakeasy Tier
Mjølner (CBD)
Viking-themed whisky and cocktail bar. Sounds gimmicky — isn’t. The mead cocktails ($22) are genuinely innovative and the dark timber interior is atmospheric without being costume-party tacky.
Above Board (Collingwood)
Intimate 12-seat bar where the bartender makes your drink right in front of you. No menu — just a conversation about what you’re in the mood for. Classic cocktails done perfectly, $20-24.
Curious (Fitzroy)
Behind a bookshelf in an actual bookshop. The whole “hidden entrance” thing is both cliché and genuinely delightful when done well. Curious does it well. The espresso martini ($22) uses Proud Mary beans.
The Neighbourhood Gems
Black Pearl (Fitzroy)
Operating since 2002 and still relevant — that’s rare in Melbourne’s hospitality scene. The negroni ($18) is the benchmark. Late-night on weekends gets rowdy in the best way.
Romeo Lane (CBD)
Italian-inspired cocktails in a laneway the size of a hallway. The Aperol Spritz ($16) is the cheapest good spritz in the CBD. Summer evenings here are perfect.
Jungle Boy (Windsor)
Hidden behind a sandwich shop. Literally walk through the fridge door. The tropical cocktails ($20-24) are sugar-balanced perfectly — sweet enough to enjoy, not sweet enough to regret. Both $22-24.
Best Negroni: Bar Americano. Accept no substitutes.
Best Date Night: Eau de Vie. a local venue with a booking is basically guaranteed to impress.
Best Solo Drink: Above Board. The bartender conversation is half the experience.
Best Group Night: Black Pearl upstairs. Room for 8+ and the cocktails keep flowing.
Most Overrated: Siglo (CBD). The terrace is stunning, the drinks are forgettable, and the prices are “we have a view” markup.
Melbourne a local venue
- Cash won’t help you. Every bar takes card, many are card-only. Don’t be the person fumbling for coins at 11pm.
- Cocktails are $18-28. If you’re shocked by this, Melbourne’s cocktail scene may not be for you.
- Dress code exists. Not formal — but “shoes and a shirt that buttons” is the minimum for CBD bars.
- Thursday is the new Friday for cocktail bars. Better service, shorter waits, same atmosphere.
- Tip your bartender $2-5 if they made something off-menu and nailed it. Not mandatory, always appreciated.
