Melbourne does not shout about its club scene the way Berlin or London does, but the quality is internationally recognised. The city has produced DJs, promoters, and sound systems that have shaped Australian dance music, and the venues reflect that pedigree.
CBD and Surrounds
Revolver Upstairs, Chapel Street — Open for 24+ hours on weekends. Melbourne’s most iconic dance venue. From Friday afternoon to Sunday morning, the music does not stop. Expect house, techno, and everything in between.
My Aeon, CBD — Underground techno and house. The sound system and room design are purpose-built for dance music.
New Guernica, CBD — Multi-room venue that covers commercial dance, hip-hop, and house across separate floors.
Inner North
Colour, Fitzroy — Newer venue that has quickly established itself in the electronic music scene. Good bookings, good sound.
Section 8, CBD fringe — Container bar that has DJs on weekends. More of a bar than a club, but the vibe often turns into a dance floor.
Inner South
Revolver Upstairs, Prahran — The beating heart of Melbourne’s all-weekend parties.
Love Machine, Prahran — Multi-level with different music on each floor. Leans commercial on the main floor, but the side rooms deliver.
What Each Night Sounds Like
- Friday: Warm-up energy. Most venues run house music, building toward peak by midnight.
- Saturday: Peak night. Every genre represented. Techno rooms, hip-hop rooms, commercial floors all running simultaneously.
- Sunday: The afters. Revolver, My Aeon, and selected warehouse events run through Sunday. Expect minimal techno and house.
Getting Home
Melbourne’s night transport has improved. The Night Bus runs until 4 AM on weekends covering major routes. Rideshare surge pricing is real after midnight — budget $30-$60 for outer-suburb trips.
The Melbourne Approach
Melbourne clubs do not require VIP tables or bottle service. The culture is egalitarian — you queue, you get in, you dance. Dress codes are minimal at most venues (clean sneakers are fine everywhere except a few Chapel Street spots).
