Free first, always. Only three places passed our checks for this page: a library and a sports reserve in Nunawading, and a bushland sanctuary in neighbouring Blackburn. That is a short list on purpose, and we would rather give you three real options than pad it.
Each one was confirmed at two independent sources in early October, including council pages and the places’ own sites. Hours come from those listings, so check the official page before a special trip, especially on public holidays, which the library page does not state.

Nunawading Library — 379 Whitehorse Road, Nunawading VIC 3131
The council says library membership is for residents who live in the City of Whitehorse and is free to join, and that free wifi and computer access are available during opening hours. The library’s page lists 17 public access computers, baby change facilities and early literacy programs. It lists Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 10:00 AM–08:00 PM, Wednesday 01:00 PM–08:00 PM, Friday 10:00 AM–05:00 PM, Saturday 09:30 AM–05:00 PM and Sunday 02:00 PM–05:00 PM.
Rain backup: The library is indoors and its page lists opening hours for every day of the week, so it is the plan B for the two outdoor places below.
Walker Park — 413 Whitehorse Road, Nunawading VIC 3131
The council lists Walker Park as a sports reserve with “One cricket oval (summer) One football oval (winter)”. OpenStreetMap tags it as a park operated by Whitehorse Council with opening_hours=24/7, and that hours line comes from OpenStreetMap only. We did not verify a playground or toilets here, so plan around that.
Free first: We found no price listed for it, and OpenStreetMap tags it as open at all hours.
Blackburn Lake Sanctuary — Blackburn VIC 3130
The sanctuary’s own site lists a playground, a “Free Electric BBQ”, picnic tables, toilets, walking paths and daylight hours, and Wikipedia calls it a 27-hectare (67-acre) bushland park. The visitor centre is listed as open 2-4pm Sundays. Its What’s On list, read on 4 October, shows a Spring bird survey on Saturday 10 October, 8:00am – 10:00am, and a Working bee on Sunday 11 October, 9:30am – 11:30am. The council lists the sanctuary among its designated environmentally sensitive wetlands, where dogs are not allowed at any time, so leave the dog at home.
Plan it: Check the sanctuary’s What’s On list for the date first, since the listed events fall on different days and times, and the listing lines we read do not state a cost.
