Getting to University of Melbourne 2026 — Transport Guide for Every Suburb

⚡ Quick Take

  • Trams 19, 58, 59 all run through the campus precinct — memorise yours
  • myki daily cap: $10.60, weekly cap: $50.40 (Zone 1+2)
  • Cycling from Carlton: 8 minutes. From Brunswick: 18 minutes. From Fitzroy: 22 minutes
  • Drive only if you must — parking near campus costs $25–$35/day and is limited

Getting to campus should not be a daily source of stress. Melbourne’s public transport network, for all its frustrations, delivers reliable access to the University of Melbourne from most inner and middle-ring suburbs. Here is exactly how to get there from where you live.

The Core Network

Three tram routes serve the University of Melbourne directly:

Tram 19 (North Coburg to Flinders St Station via Elizabeth Street) Stops at: Royal Parade (for Parkville colleges and campus west), stop 12 on Royal Parade Best for: Brunswick, Coburg, North Melbourne, CBD

Tram 58 (West Coburg to Toorak via William Street) Stops at: Grattan Street and Royal Parade Best for: West Coburg, Moonee Ponds, Parkville direct, South Yarra/Prahran

Tram 59 (Airport West to Flinders Street via Royal Parade) Stops at: Royal Parade (Grattan Street stop, direct to main campus entry) Best for: Moonee Ponds, Essendon, Flemington

Cycling — The Fastest Option from Carlton and Brunswick

Melbourne has improved its cycling infrastructure significantly. From Carlton to campus: 8 minutes. This is not a hypothetical — it is faster than any tram during peak hours.

The Carlton route: Grattan Street has a dedicated bike lane for most of its length. The Royal Parade entry puts you at the main campus gate. Lock at the bike cages near Babel Restaurant or the Melbourne School of Design.

The Brunswick route: Use the Main Yarra Trail or Upfield Bike Path from Brunswick to North Carlton, then Grattan Street. 18–22 minutes depending on start point. This is genuinely faster than the tram on most mornings.

The Fitzroy route: Smith Street or Johnston Street west to Carlton, then Grattan. 20–25 minutes. Hilly sections near North Carlton add 2–3 minutes.

Bike hire: Melbourne Bike Share stations exist on campus and throughout Carlton. $2.70 per 30 minutes for casual use. For daily use, buy a second-hand bike at Swanston Cycles or Fitzroy Cycles for $150–$300.

myki Costs

A concession myki card (for students under 18, or students with a State concession card) costs $4.40 per day with a daily cap. Full-fare zone 1+2 (covers most student areas) costs $10.60/day, $50.40/week.

Concession card eligibility: UniMelb students on Youth Allowance, Austudy, or ABSTUDY qualify for concession myki. Apply through the Department of Human Services before semester starts. Full-time domestic students under 18 qualify automatically.

International students: No concession available. Budget $50/week for transport if you are not cycling.

The Cycling vs myki Cost Comparison

OptionWeekly Cost
Full-fare myki (Zone 1)$50.40
Concession myki (Zone 1)~$22
Bike (after purchase)$0 ongoing
Bike share (daily)~$13–$19

Over a 20-week year, buying a $200 second-hand bike saves a full-fare myki holder $800 in transport costs. The maths are clear.

Parking — Skip It

Parking near UniMelb is a tax on poor planning. Council parking on Grattan, Swanston, and Bouverie Streets has 2-hour limits. The Wilson/Secure Parking garages on Royal Parade and Leicester Street charge $25–$35/day. The university has limited staff/permit parking — students are not eligible.

If you live in an inner suburb, you should not be driving to campus. If you must drive (outer suburbs, equipment transport, accessibility), the closest affordable parking is a 10–15 minute walk away at Melbourne Central Shopping Centre ($12–$18/day with validation in some configurations) or Flagstaff Gardens area.

Accessibility

The university’s Access and Disability unit maintains a full accessibility transport guide. Free shuttle operates between Parkville campus, the Law building on Victoria Street, and the Business School on Swanston Street every 30 minutes during semester. Contact [email protected] for personalised route planning.

The Morning Tram Hack

The 19 tram from Brunswick gets congested between 8–9am. If your lecture is at 9am and you catch the tram from Sydney Road at 8:25am, you will be standing the whole way and arrive at 8:55am flustered.

Solution: leave at 8:05am, catch an earlier, emptier tram. Alternatively, most UniMelb lectures are recorded. Know your tolerance for crowded trams and plan accordingly.
