Victorian school holidays run 27 June to 12 July 2026. In Preston that means two weeks of cold mornings, early dark, and kids who need somewhere to be. High Street loses its shine when it’s 9°C and raining. This list is organised by cost and distance so you can decide what’s worth the effort on any given day.
1. Book Council Holiday Programs at Your Local Library — Free
Darebin City Council runs free drop-in and bookable school-holiday activities at Preston and Reservoir libraries every winter break — craft sessions, storytime, coding workshops, and more. These fill fast. Check the Darebin Libraries events page and the council Eventbrite as soon as holidays are announced. Spots for popular sessions can be gone within days of opening. Free for all ages; parents stay.
2. Warm Up With a Hot Chocolate on High Street — Budget
Preston’s cafe strip gives you a genuine reason to leave the house without committing to a full day out. Arepa Days on Dundas Place does something different from the standard flat-white crowd. Acqua Farina Woodfire Oven Pizzeria is worth knowing about on a slow morning. Basil House at 461 High Street and Benzina Cantina further up High Street both work for a pit stop before or after any local activity. Order the hot chocolate, hand the kids something warm, and count it as a win.
3. A Winter Walk Through Preston’s Green Corridors — Free
Cold doesn’t mean stay inside. Bracken Avenue Linear Park is a genuinely pleasant strip for a short walk with younger kids — flat, easy, no traffic. A H Capp Reserve and A.G. Davis Park both have open space for running around, which is often all kids actually need after a morning indoors. Dress in layers, bring a ball, allow 30–45 minutes. Add a cafe stop on the way back and you’ve covered half a morning.
4. NGV Free Galleries, City — Free (Permanent) / Ticketed (Masterpieces)
The NGV’s permanent collection at NGV International on St Kilda Rd is free, and it’s one of the better wet-weather options in Melbourne for families. For older kids and teens, the NGV Melbourne Winter Masterpieces: Cartier exhibition runs 12 June to 4 October 2026 (ticketed — book ahead). Younger kids tend to do better in the free galleries where there’s no pressure to be quiet and respectful around priceless jewellery. Preston to the NGV is roughly 25 minutes by tram down St Georges Road or a direct drive.
5. Firelight Festival, Docklands — Free
3–5 July 2026, Harbour Esplanade, Docklands. Free entry. Nightly light-and-water shows at 6.30 pm and 8.30 pm, food trucks on site. This lands squarely in week one of the holidays and it’s free, which is rare for anything with genuine spectacle. The 5 pm sunset works in your favour here — it’s properly dark by show time. Preston to Docklands is around 30 minutes by car, or take the train into the city and walk across. Go on 3 or 4 July if you want slightly smaller crowds than closing night.
6. Queen Victoria Winter Night Market — Free Entry
Running every Wednesday from 3 June to 26 August, 5–10 pm. Free to enter; you spend what you want on food. Fire pits, street food from around the world, a good outdoor crowd even in the cold. Preston is close enough that this is a genuine school-holiday midweek option — hop on the train to Melbourne Central or drive in. Best for kids who are comfortable with busy outdoor markets at night; less ideal for exhausted toddlers at 9 pm.
7. Ice Skating at O’Brien Icehouse, Docklands — Budget
The Icehouse at Docklands has a dedicated under-8s area and skate aids available, which makes it workable for younger kids who’ve never been on ice. It’s a ticketed session — book online in advance during school holidays as popular time slots sell out. Sessions are timed, which actually helps with managing kids’ energy. Preston to Docklands is 30 minutes by car or a short train and tram combination. Combine with the Firelight Festival if you want to make a full city day of it.
8. Heated Indoor Pool — Budget
Every Preston family should know where their nearest heated indoor pool is. Reservoir Leisure Centre (Darebin Leisure) is the closest, with an indoor heated pool running year-round. School-holiday lane swim and recreational swim sessions are bookable online. This is a go-to for a cold Tuesday when you need the kids genuinely tired by 2 pm. Prices vary by family composition — check Darebin Leisure’s website for current school-holiday rates.
9. Indoor Play Centre or Trampoline Park — Budget
There are several indoor play centres and trampoline parks within 20 minutes of Preston across the inner north and northern suburbs. These are not cheap, but they are effective when you need two hours of guaranteed child exhaustion and somewhere warm for parents to sit with a coffee. Search “indoor play Preston” or “trampoline park Thomastown/Epping” for the closest current options. Book weekday sessions where possible — weekends fill quickly.
10. Snow Day-Trip to Lake Mountain — Budget to Moderate
Season: 6 June to 6 September 2026. Lake Mountain near Marysville is about 2 to 2.5 hours from Preston each way — treat it as an honest full-day commitment, not a morning trip. There’s a snow-play area suitable for young children, and tobogganing runs roughly $33 for ages 6 and up (check the Lake Mountain website for current 2026 pricing before you go). Take the Maroondah Highway through Healesville. Leave Preston by 8 am if you want to avoid the mid-morning car park crunch on popular days. Pack layers, snacks, dry clothes for the drive home, and hot drinks.
11. Vacation Care — Weekday Safety Net
If you have work commitments during the two weeks, Darebin Council vacation care and YMCA Victoria both run programs in and around Preston for school-age kids. Hours are typically 8 am to 6 pm. These fill early — ideally book in the fortnight before holidays begin. This is not a suggestion to outsource your holidays; it’s a genuine option on the days when logistics make it necessary.
Planning note: The single highest-value thing you can do this week is check the Darebin Libraries events page and lock in a council holiday session. They’re free, they’re close, and they’re gone fast. Everything else on this list will still be available if you decide the night before.
