The school holidays land on June 27 this year and Spotswood winters are not subtle. By 5pm it is dark, the wind comes off the bay, and the question of what to do with restless kids for two and a half weeks becomes genuinely pressing. This guide is written for parents who live here — not for tourists. Drive times are honest, venues are real, and nothing has been invented to pad a list.
Victorian school holidays run 27 June – 12 July 2026. Budget at least one week-two-day plan so you have fallback options when the weather turns ugly mid-week.
1. Firelight Festival at Docklands — FREE
The Firelight Festival runs 3–5 July along Harbour Esplanade, Docklands. Light and water shows go at 6.30pm and 8.30pm each night, food trucks are set up along the waterfront, and entry is free. From Spotswood it is a short drive or a quick trip on the 109 tram. Dress warmly — this is an outdoor evening event — but the spectacle is genuinely worth it for primary-school-age kids and up. Check the City of Melbourne event page for any last-minute changes to the program.
2. NGV Free Permanent Galleries — FREE for under 18
NGV International on St Kilda Rd has free permanent galleries and admission is free for anyone under 18. For older kids and teens, the Cartier Winter Masterpieces exhibition (12 Jun – 4 Oct, ticketed) is the marquee attraction this season — jewellery, watches, and objects with real visual impact for teenagers who have even a passing interest in design or history. For younger children, the permanent collection is a warm, low-pressure few hours. Spotswood to St Kilda Rd is around 20 minutes by car or easily reached via public transport.
3. Ice Skating at O’Brien Icehouse, Docklands — Budget
Docklands’ O’Brien Icehouse has a dedicated under-8s area and skate aids available for children still finding their feet on ice. It is one of the few genuinely indoor, genuinely winter activities in Melbourne that children ask to repeat. Book in advance — school holiday sessions sell out. Spotswood is well-placed for Docklands: it is a short drive across the West Gate Bridge or the bridge via Lorimer Street.
4. Queen Victoria Night Market — FREE entry, Wednesdays
Every Wednesday through to 26 August (5–10pm), the Queen Vic Winter Night Market operates with street food stalls, fire pits, and live entertainment. Entry is free; food is the spend. This works well for families with older children or teens who will happily graze from stall to stall in the cold. The drive from Spotswood to the CBD is straightforward via Williamstown Road.
5. Newport Lakes Reserve — FREE
Newport Lakes is five minutes from Spotswood and worth knowing well on a dry winter day. The arboretum section and the reserve itself have enough undulating ground and tree cover to make it interesting for children who need to burn energy outdoors. Pack a thermos rather than counting on café facilities. On a cold but sunny July morning, this is the zero-cost local option that requires no planning.
6. Craig Street Park and Donald McLean Reserve — FREE
For the days when you need an hour of fresh air without committing to a trip, Craig Street Park and Donald McLean Reserve are local fallbacks. They are not destination parks, but they are real green space within the suburb that works for young children who simply need to run. Layer them with something else on the same day rather than treating them as a full activity.
7. Hot Chocolate at a Local Cafe — Budget
The cafes in Spotswood — including those listed under the Eat and Drink and Family Guide to Spotswood categories on this site — include spots where a mid-morning hot chocolate and a warm seat is a legitimate reason to visit. Pick a mid-week morning when cafes are quieter, bring a small activity or book, and let the cold outside be someone else’s problem for an hour. This sounds minor but for younger children it is a genuinely good school-holiday hour.
8. Your Local Library School Holiday Program — FREE
Hobsons Bay City Council runs school holiday programs at its library branches, including craft sessions and storytime events that are free or very low cost. These fill fast — book through the council’s Eventbrite page as soon as the program is published. Sessions are typically aimed at primary-school-age children and are timed for morning slots, which makes them a useful anchor for a weekday. Do not leave this until week two.
9. Council or YMCA Vacation Care — Budget
If you need structured childcare during the holidays, Hobsons Bay has council-linked vacation care programs running standard hours (typically 8am–6pm). This is not a day-out option but it is worth including because it is real and useful for working parents managing the full two and a half weeks. Book ahead — these programs have limited places and Spotswood families are not the only ones looking.
10. Nearest Heated Indoor Pool — Budget
A session at your nearest heated indoor pool is a reliable school-holiday move for families with children old enough to swim independently. Hobsons Bay Leisure Centre serves the area. Book lane or recreational swim sessions during school holidays rather than arriving unannounced — capacity is managed during the holiday period. An hour in warm water on a cold morning is a better use of time and money than most alternatives.
11. Lake Mountain Snow Day Trip — Full Day, Budget to Mid-Range
Lake Mountain near Marysville is the closest snowfield to Melbourne, around two to two and a half hours each way from Spotswood. The season runs 6 June – 6 September 2026. There is a designated snow-play area, and toboggan hire is around $33 for ages six and up. This is an honest full-day commitment: leave by 7.30am, expect to be back by 6pm, and bring dry spare clothes, snacks, and waterproof layers. The drive through the Yarra Valley is straightforward. It works best on a weekday when the fields are less crowded. Mt Buller is further and better suited to families who want to ski — it is a bigger investment of time and money.
Planning tip
Lock in the library and vacation care bookings this week — they go early. The Firelight Festival and Icehouse are also best booked rather than walked in on. Everything else on this list can be decided the morning of, which is the best kind of school-holiday flexibility.
