December can disappear into invitations and shopping trips before you choose one outing you actually want. These confirmed options do different jobs: a free-entry evening, a design market, a food-focused ticketed event and an indoor exhibition. Use the date and interest match first, then compare the real cost.
Before you commit

| Lifelike, ACMI | 20 November 2026–18 April 2027 | Ticketed exhibition, separate from free museum |
A Wednesday night that does not need an admission purchase
Queen Victoria Market's Christmas Night Market runs on Wednesdays through 16 December, 5–10pm. In December that gives the listed 2, 9 and 16 December evenings. Entry is free; food and gift purchases are separate.
Choose it for a flexible catch-up or browse rather than a guaranteed dinner package. Set a meeting point and food budget if the group tends to arrive hungry. Check the current event notice and transport before leaving, especially if you plan to stay until near closing.

Design shopping: protect time for the stalls you want
The Big Design Market is at the Royal Exhibition Building on 4–6 December. Adult entry is listed at A$8 plus a booking fee, with children 12 and under free. The ticket is for one entry on a single day.
Use it for a focused gift-shopping visit. The entry cost applies whether you buy something or not, so choose the format intentionally. A ticket valid on a choice of days does not mean unlimited returns across the weekend; read the actual conditions before arranging separate visits with different friends.

A food event: compare the package, not just the word market
The Good Food & Wine Show Christmas Edition at MCEC also runs 4–6 December, with Friday evening and weekend daytime hours. The venue lists A$39.95 general admission and a higher-priced glass package. Final fees and inclusions need checking for the ticket selected.
This is a different commitment from a free-entry shopping wander. Choose it because the food-focused event interests you, then identify which experiences or purchases remain extra. If you only want one December outing, picking by format is more useful than trying to fit both ticketed events into the same afternoon.

An indoor exhibition with dates beyond the Christmas rush
ACMI lists Lifelike, a puppetry exhibition, from 20 November 2026 to 18 April 2027. It is separately ticketed, unlike general museum entry. Confirm the actual session, age-category price and booking fee directly.
The longer run gives this choice a different role in the diary: you do not have to force it into the first December weekend. Check Christmas Day closure and any selected-date conditions. A quieter calendar later on may suit your group better than stacking every visit ahead of the gift-shopping deadline.
