The Nightlife Guide to Prahran
Prahran’s nightlife runs on a split personality. On one side, you’ve got Greville Street’s indie bars and live music venues where the evening winds down around midnight. On the other, there’s Chapel Street’s never-say-die club culture where the night doesn’t really start until 1am and doesn’t end until someone turns the lights on. This guide covers both — because a proper Prahran night out usually involves at least one of each.
1. Revolver Upstairs — The Chapel Street Legend
Where: 229 Chapel Street, Prahran
No nightlife guide to Prahran — or arguably Melbourne — is complete without Revolver Upstairs. Known locally as “Revs,” this venue has been running DJs six nights a week for years, with a Saturday session that famously stretches from Friday evening straight through to Sunday morning. If you’ve never been, imagine a gritty, no-frills nightclub with a sound system that rattles your chest and a crowd that doesn’t care what you’re wearing.
Entry is usually free before 11pm and $15–$25 after, depending on the night. Drinks sit around $12–$18 for spirits and $9–$14 for beers. The venue also houses Colonel Tan’s, a Thai restaurant run by chef Karen Batson that serves genuinely good food (mains $18–$28) until late. Eating dinner upstairs before descending into the club is a legitimate pre-game strategy.
The insider move: Thursday nights are the sweet spot — enough people to feel alive, not so many that you can’t move. The DJs are usually more experimental on Thursdays too, which means better music and fewer requests for “something you can sing along to.”
2. Electric Ladyland — The Chapel Street Icon
Where: 187 Greville Street, Prahran
Electric Ladyland is one of those places that’s impossible to describe to someone who hasn’t been. Part bar, part club, part fever dream — it’s a narrow, multi-level venue that packs in a younger, louder crowd on Chapel Street’s busier end. The music leans heavily towards dance and electronic, with DJs spinning everything from house to techno to whatever sub-genre was invented last Tuesday.
The drinks are Chapel Street-priced ($12–$16 for cocktails, $9–$12 for beers), and the space itself looks like someone redecorated a Victorian terrace house with neon and fairy lights and then invited the entire population of a music festival to move in.
The insider move: The rooftop/upper level has better air circulation and a slightly more relaxed vibe. If the ground floor feels like a mosh pit on a hot night, head upstairs. Also — drink plenty of water. It gets warm in there.
3. Circus Bar & Night Club — The Party Venue
Where: Prahran
Circus is the venue you end up at when the night has gone off-script in the best possible way. It’s a proper nightclub with a focus on themed nights, guest DJs, and an atmosphere that’s closer to a house party than a corporate venue. Entry fees are usually $10–$20, and drinks hover around $12 for spirits and $10 for beers.
The crowd skews late-20s to mid-30s — people who still want to dance but don’t necessarily want to be at a venue full of 18-year-olds. It’s also one of the few Prahran clubs that consistently books local Melbourne DJs rather than touring names, which gives it a genuine community feel.
The insider move: Check their socials for themed nights before deciding when to go. They run everything from ’90s retro nights to deep house sessions, and the crowd changes dramatically depending on the theme.
4. Leonards House of Love — The Indie Bar
Where: Prahran
Leonards is where you go when you want a night out without the full Chapel Street commitment. It’s a neighbourhood bar with craft cocktails ($16–$20), a solid beer selection, and a playlist that runs from indie rock to soul without ever veering into mainstream club territory. The space is intimate — maybe 60–80 people at capacity — which means you can actually have a conversation without shouting.
This is the kind of bar that’s perfect for a Thursday or Friday night when you want to go out but not “go out out.” The cocktail list changes seasonally, and the bartenders are genuinely skilled — ask for a recommendation and you’ll get something thoughtful, not just “what’s popular.”
The insider move: The back room occasionally hosts live music and comedy nights. Check their events calendar — some of the best small gigs in Prahran happen here without much fanfare.
5. One Six One — The Late-Night Option
Where: Prahran
One Six One fills a specific niche in Prahran’s nightlife: the place you go when everywhere else has either closed or become unbearable. It’s a proper late-night venue with a focus on DJ-led events, a dress code that leans “smart casual at minimum,” and a crowd that’s there to dance, not just be seen.
The venue runs regular themed nights and has built a reputation for its Saturday sessions, which typically kick off around 11pm and run until 5am or later. Entry ranges from $15–$30 depending on the event, and bottle service is available if that’s your thing (no judgement, some nights call for a table).
The insider move: Go early (before midnight) on Saturday and you’ll often get in for free or reduced price. After 1am, the queue along Chapel Street can stretch down the block.
6. The Emerson — The Rooftop Option
Where: Prahran (Chapel Street end)
The Emerson brings something that Prahran’s nightlife desperately needs: a rooftop. In summer, it’s one of the best spots in the inner south for drinks with a view, a slightly dressed-up crowd, and a DJ who plays just loud enough to set the mood without making conversation impossible. Cocktails run $18–$22, beers $10–$14.
In winter, the indoor spaces are stylish and warm, but the venue really comes alive from October to March when the rooftop is the main draw. It’s more of a bar-club hybrid than a full nightclub — think pre-drinks destination or early-evening sunset drinks rather than a 4am finish.
The insider move: Sunday afternoon sessions in summer are criminally underrated. You’ll get a spot on the rooftop without fighting for it, the DJ plays chilled house, and the whole vibe is “I’m not hungover, I’m just vibing.”
7. Love Machine — The Big Night Out
Where: Prahran
Love Machine is for nights when subtlety isn’t on the menu. It’s a high-energy club venue with themed rooms, guest DJs, and a crowd that’s come to dance. The music ranges from commercial house to R&B to whatever’s trending on TikTok, depending on the room and the night.
Entry is usually $15–$25, and drinks are standard Chapel Street pricing ($12–$16). It’s not the most sophisticated venue on this list, but it’s reliable for a big night with friends when you want music you recognise and a dance floor that’s actually moving.
The insider move: Their themed nights (Halloween, New Year’s, and seasonal specials) are genuinely well-produced. If you’re going to go, go for one of these rather than a regular Saturday — the production value makes it worth the entry fee.
Getting Home Safe — Prahran After Dark
Prahran’s nightlife is concentrated along Chapel Street and Greville Street. Here’s what you need to know to get home in one piece:
- Chapel Street late-night strip: The stretch between Greville Street and High Street gets rowdy after midnight. Stick to well-lit areas. The Prahran end of Chapel Street (towards Commercial Road) is generally calmer than the Windsor end.
- Trams: The 78 tram runs along Chapel Street until approximately 1am on weekends. Night Network buses cover the route after that. The 109 along Commercial Road has similar timings.
- Ride-share pick-up: Use the designated pick-up zones on Chapel Street near Prahran Station. Do NOT try to get picked up in the middle of the strip after midnight — the traffic is chaos and your driver will cancel.
- Prahran Station area: The station forecourt and surrounding streets are generally well-lit and patrolled on busy nights.
- Police: Glen Eira Police Station at 360 Punt Road, South Yarra (open 24 hours).
- Emergency: Call 000. If someone’s been spiked or is in distress, tell venue security immediately — most Prahran clubs have trained staff and protocols.
- Looking after each other: Melbourne’s nightlife culture is getting better at this, but it’s worth saying — if a friend’s had too much, get them water, sit them down, and make sure they get home safely. Don’t just leave them on a bench with a kebab and a prayer.
What We Skipped and Why
- Centrefold Lounge — Adult entertainment venue. Not something we cover in a general nightlife guide.
- 56 Bricks — Currently operating irregularly. We’ll revisit when their schedule stabilises.
- The Esplanade Hotel — Technically in Melbourne (St Kilda), not Prahran. Wrong suburb.
We only list venues we’ve personally visited and can vouch for. Prices and entry fees are verified for early 2026 but will vary depending on the night and event. Always check the venue’s social media or website before heading out.
