January planning is easier when you stop asking for the single best activity and start asking which kind of day your family can comfortably do. The options below use published venue formats and a confirmed exhibition date range. They are not a fabricated January holiday programme or a promise of ticket availability.

Under-fives: use the gallery's actual age range

The museum's Children's Gallery is designed for babies to five-year-olds and uses free 50-minute slots in addition to general admission. Reserve the slot you want rather than treating the child admission category as a booking.

A short scheduled visit can give the day enough structure without requiring every hour to be filled. Check the January calendar when reservations open or change. If an older sibling is coming, choose the rest of the visit around interests both children can share rather than assuming the same play space fits every age.

Mixed ages: keep the library option flexible

The State Library Children's Quarter is a free space for children up to 12 and their carers, with family facilities. Adults remain responsible for supervision. The library is closed on New Year's Day, so that date is not a fallback opening.

Use this for a shorter city outing or an indoor alternative. Check the specific space and current activities before promising a workshop. A permanent family space and a bookable holiday event are different things; you can enjoy the former without inventing a programme for the latter.

Screen interests: distinguish free museum entry from Lifelike

ACMI lists Lifelike from 20 November 2026 to 18 April 2027, placing January within its published exhibition run. It is a ticketed puppetry exhibition, separate from free general museum entry.

Read the actual age-category price and any booking fee before comparing it with another family outing. This is an option for a group interested in the subject, not a claim that every child will enjoy it. Check the selected session and leave any second stop optional.

Outdoor energy: the Melbourne and Cranbourne sites differ

Melbourne Gardens publishes free entry and a Children's Garden schedule that expands during Victorian school holidays. Use the Melbourne visitor information rather than borrowing rules from Cranbourne, which has different opening and holiday arrangements.

Check current weather and operational notices, then choose how much walking suits the group. A shorter visit with a picnic plan can be enough. Paid tours, rides and cafe purchases are optional extras, not inclusions implied by free garden entry.

A railway day: book the journey you mean to take

Puffing Billy's fares and duration depend on the route. The published January timetable varies by date and journey, and advance booking is required. A return from Belgrave to Lakeside is not interchangeable with a departure from Lakeside or a longer Gembrook journey.

Start with the children’s realistic time commitment, then select the route and all necessary ticket categories. Include the journey to the departure station, food and the return connection in the day. A youth public-transport entitlement is not a free ticket for this separate heritage railway.
