Puffing Billy is not one ticket with one interchangeable departure. The route determines where you start, how long you are away and what the family pays. Before comparing a tour package with booking directly, make sure both cover the journey you actually want and enough time to use the return ticket.

| Lakeside–Gembrook | A$66 | Starts at Lakeside, not Belgrave |
Belgrave–Lakeside: read both halves of the return journey
For travel from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, the official page lists A$66 for an adult Belgrave–Lakeside return. Its timetable describes roughly an hour each way, with time at Lakeside depending on the service selected.
The gap between outbound and return matters as much as time on the train. Check the service you are actually buying, then plan food and any activity in that gap. Do not assume another departure in the timetable is available as a flexible replacement for the return shown on your booking.

Menzies Creek: shorter does not mean it runs every day
The official adult return fare for the selected Belgrave–Menzies Creek journey is A$43.50. The timetable describes a shorter ride, but availability varies by day and timetable period. Some periods do not operate this journey.
Choose it when a smaller time commitment is the point, provided it actually runs on your date. Do not build a family day around an old screenshot of a departure. A shorter route is a different product, so comparing its price with a longer package does not by itself establish a discount.

Gembrook: check which station your ticket starts from
Belgrave–Gembrook return is listed at A$84.50 for an adult, while Lakeside–Gembrook return is A$66. The names matter: a ticket beginning at Lakeside does not include getting there from Belgrave.
Use the route-specific timetable to understand the stop and return arrangements. If you are comparing an organised excursion, check whether it includes transfers to the correct departure point. The cheaper headline is not a saving if it leaves out a connection you still need to buy or organise.

Family arithmetic: toddlers and infants are separate categories
The checked Belgrave–Lakeside fares list an A$165 family option for two adults and two children/toddlers, with separate child, toddler and infant categories. Compare your actual household with the published family conditions rather than assuming everyone under four is free.
Advance booking is required, and the railway states that it does not operate on Christmas Day. A Youth myki entitlement does not replace this separately ticketed heritage journey. Add the trip to the station, food and return travel to your budget, and confirm accessibility needs before purchasing.
