On a first Melbourne weekend, the temptation is to collect landmarks until the day becomes a transport exercise. Start with the kind of visit you want, then choose one anchor. These four give you different ways into the city. They are alternatives, not instructions to complete every stop before lunch.
Before you commit
| Anchor | What it offers | The practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| ACMI, Fed Square | Screen culture; general entry free | Special programmes may need tickets |
| NGV Australia, Fed Square | Australian art collection | Different from NGV International on St Kilda Road |
| State Library, Swanston Street | Public library spaces and exhibitions | Room and holiday hours differ |
| Melbourne Museum, Carlton | A separate museum visit | General adult admission and the trip there |
Fed Square: start with something you can actually enter
ACMI is at Fed Square, with free general museum entry and separately ticketed programmes. Choose a museum visit when you want a central indoor anchor without arranging a general-admission purchase. If a screening is the reason for going, use that session's ticket and time instead.
Check your departure point and current disruptions before leaving. A central address is useful, but it does not prove the same journey works for every hotel, suburb or mobility need. Keep your booking confirmation accessible and leave enough time to find the actual entrance.

Australian art or international art: choose the address deliberately
The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia is at Fed Square; NGV International is on St Kilda Road. Both publish free collection entry, with possible charges for special exhibitions. They are different buildings and collection focuses.
If the group already wants Australian art, there is no need to cross the river simply because another list says 'NGV'. If a specific exhibition is at the other venue, plan for that one. This small address check is more useful than squeezing both into a rushed first afternoon.

State Library: a different pace in the northern CBD
State Library Victoria is at 328 Swanston Street. Its published general hours are 10am–6pm, with named holiday closures. Check the particular room or programme you want rather than assuming every service runs for the entire building day.
This can be the main outing for someone who enjoys a slower visit. Use the official visitor guidance for bags, access and spaces. Leave food stops flexible; arriving somewhere unfamiliar is easier when there is room to change your mind without losing the next non-refundable reservation.

Carlton is its own museum plan
Melbourne Museum is at 11 Nicholson Street in Carlton, with separate general-admission categories. It is a different destination from the Fed Square venues, so check the journey between them if you intend to combine visits.
Use current Transport Victoria planning and fare eligibility, especially when travelling with children. Do not assume every city journey falls in the Free Tram Zone. One enjoyable museum visit with an unhurried trip home is a successful first weekend; the alternatives can stay saved for another one.
