With one day in Melbourne, choosing what to leave out is useful planning. These are three alternative ways to spend the day, not stages in an endurance itinerary. Start with the subject or setting that interests you, then check your actual arrival, departure and walking needs. Food and transport sit alongside the plan, not inside an invented all-inclusive price.
Before you commit
| Route | Main anchor | Optional addition |
|---|---|---|
| Screen and Australian art | ACMI or NGV Australia, Fed Square | The other collection if time and interest remain |
| Library-led | State Library Victoria | A separate CBD meal or short wander |
| Outdoor day | Melbourne Gardens | A paid activity only if deliberately booked |
Screen and art: keep the first route around Fed Square
ACMI and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia are both at Fed Square, with free general museum/collection entry and separately ticketed programmes where applicable. Choose one as the main visit rather than deciding in advance that both must receive equal time.
Start after confirming the actual opening and any exhibition booking. Pause for food when it suits, and add the second venue only if your group still wants it. If you wanted NGV International, use its St Kilda Road address instead; the shared initials do not make the two gallery buildings interchangeable.

Library-led: plan around a place you can linger
State Library Victoria, at 328 Swanston Street, publishes general visitor hours and specific holiday closures. Check the room, exhibition or activity you want before treating the whole building as one attraction with one set of conditions.
Make the library the anchor and leave an unhurried meal or shorter walk optional. This route suits a visitor who wants to spend time in one place rather than cross the city between timed tickets. If you have luggage, check the visitor rules and actual storage arrangements instead of assuming every venue can hold your bags.

Outdoor day: choose the garden visit before the extra activity
Melbourne Gardens publishes free entry, with separately bookable activities. Choose the section and amount of walking that fit your group, then check the weather and current notices. Do not assume that a paid ride, tour or water-based activity is included just because general entry is free.
Use the current journey planner for your actual starting point and departure deadline. Keep a return buffer rather than claiming a universal airport or station transfer time. If the weather changes, choose one indoor anchor from the other routes; there is no need to bolt a second complete itinerary onto the first.
