The week between Christmas and New Year is excellent for a Melbourne outing and terrible for assuming ordinary opening hours. Start with one place that matches the day and your group, then add something nearby if you feel like it. These are plans built from published visitor information, not a promise that every special programme or session has space.
Before you commit
| Anchor | Published holiday distinction | Build the day around |
|---|---|---|
| ACMI | Closed Christmas Day; ordinary museum hours otherwise published | Screen culture, with paid events checked separately |
| NGV | Both main venues closed Christmas Day | One collection, not a race through both buildings |
| State Library Victoria | Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day | A visit from 27 December, subject to current notices |
| Melbourne Gardens | Published as open every day of the year | A shorter outdoor wander with a weather backup |
A Fed Square screen-culture afternoon
ACMI lists free museum entry, with some ticketed events, and a Christmas Day closure. For a holiday-week visit, check the actual exhibition or cinema session separately. A museum being open does not establish that every event inside runs on your chosen day.
Keep the plan deliberately small: one main visit and an optional food stop. This suits groups who want an indoor anchor without committing to several timed tickets. Save a second attraction for another day if the first visit is working well. A holiday is allowed to contain a spare hour.

One NGV building, chosen by the collection
NGV International and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia publish free collection entry and a Christmas Day closure; special exhibitions can have separate charges. Choose the collection you want rather than treating the two addresses as one building.
If you want a particular exhibition, check its dates and booking conditions, then build your arrival around that ticket. The permanent collection can be a different plan with a different cost. Leave time to look at fewer things properly instead of using the day to prove you can cross every room.

The library visit belongs after Boxing Day
State Library Victoria explicitly lists Boxing Day as a closure, alongside Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Its ordinary published hours are 10am–6pm. That makes the date filter essential: this is not a Boxing Day fallback when another venue is closed.
Check the hours for the particular room, service or exhibition you want. A reading-room visit and a family programme are different tasks, and not everything follows the building's general opening time. If the library is your anchor, avoid attaching a non-refundable booking immediately before it without allowing travel time.

An outdoor day that can stay short
Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria says Melbourne Gardens is open every day of the year, with free entry. The Melbourne and Cranbourne sites have different holiday arrangements, so use the correct visitor page. Paid activities and cafe purchases are separate decisions.
Choose a comfortable section of the gardens and an appropriate time for the weather. Pack what your group needs rather than relying on every nearby cafe to trade through the holiday week. Check current closures and conditions; an annual opening policy is not a guarantee against an exceptional weather closure.
